Library Loot

I love this idea! I don't order enough books to warrant participation in Mailbox Monday, so when Eva posted about this idea, I was so excited to be able to participate!

Being a public librarian, I am always grabbing books off the shelf. I doubt I'm structured enough to actually post this on a certain day (whatever happened to me participating in "It's Tuesday, where are you?" for example), so my plan will be to post whenever I pick up something new.

Today you get lucky, because I will post the 2 books that I just grabbed, as well as anything that is in my account worth sharing.

1) Harry, A History: The True Story of a Boy Wizard, His Fans, and Life Inside the Harry Potter Phenomenon - I checked this one out a couple of weeks ago when it was passed to me by a coworker. I may or may not finish it.

2) The Little Shop of Horrors - This DVD is of the original film. The quality is horrible and ultimately we fast-forwarded to the scene with Jack Nicholson and then put in the 1980s version. I'll return it soon.

3) The Lady Elizabeth: A Novel by Alison Weir. This is my current read, and while I'm enjoying it, it is very slow-going. I want to finish it, but I may end up abandoning it.

4) The Portion Teller: Smartsize Your Way to Permanent Weight Loss. This one grabbed my attention as I was waiting for the elevator a few minutes ago.

5) Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives. This one is relevant to my work as well as parenting.

I liked The Lady Elizabeth, but I also thought it was slow. I liked Innocent Traitor more. Probably because I knew a lot less about Lady Jane Grey.

Out of curiosity, what are the lending policies for staff at your library? Staff at mine are not charged fines (yay!).

At the public library system I used to work for, there were no fines for anybody, but you could only renew four times. Very overdue items were considered "lost" and eventually your account was blocked and you could not check out more until you returned them or paid for them.

At times I would have over 100 items checked out - it was so easy to grab appealing things off the shelves, but then I'd often have to return them (due to holds on them) before I read/viewed/listened to them.

We have the same policy (no fines for staff). I have the same policy of just grabbing something if it looks interesting! More often than not, I glance through it a few times (if it's not fiction) and then return it. I'm worried The Lady Elizabeth will have holds on it, since Alison Weir is coming here. Even though I could just hold on to it until I finish it, I feel bad doing that when someone's waiting!

I wish we had no fines for customers!

Lezlie - I think you hit the nail on the head. I've read several books with Elizabeth as a main character now, and I feel like I'm reading the same thing over and over. I like that this one is from her perspective, but I keep reading sections and trying to remember how they was laid out in Innocent Traitor. I'm a good 150+ pages in, though, and think I'll stick with it.
